Why can’t I stop these thoughts?

Introduction

It’s understandable that people experience various mental health problems today. The world is a mess. Satan and his demons continue to destroy people’s lives. People, in their natural selves, hurt themselves and one another. It’s more surprising that some of us actually remain unaffected. But that begs the question — Why are a lot of people affected but not all? People suffering from mental health issues ask themselves, “Why can’t I stop these thoughts?” They want to know the root causes. Depending on who you talk to, the answers can be varied. It all depends on one’s worldview. Basically, there are only two basic worldviews.

Two Basic Worldviews

1. The *Natural* Worldview: All reality is *within* nature only. (Psalm 53:1) – This is how most people understand reality. Even those claiming to be Christians may have this worldview without realizing it. It basically sets aside the existence of the supernatural, or at the very least. does not take it seriously as being relevant to the problem. People who have this worldview see mental health problems as only psychological, biological, or maybe both, but nothing more.

2. The *Holistic* Worldview: Reality is both within nature and *beyond* nature. (Psalm 19:1-2; 3 John 1:2; Luke 4:16-19; Hebrews 4:15) – In this worldview, we see reality as having both natural and supernatural components. We do not separate them. There may be “natural” reasons behind our mental health problems. That can be a valid analysis. But there can be supernatural or “beyond” natural causes also.

Conclusion

1. Central Idea: “Only a *holistic* worldview can help you and me.”

2. We must guard ourselves against deception. Reality is not just what we see or experience. It’s not even just our perception. Our mental suffering may have deeper causes.

3. Next tiime you experience any kind of mental affliction, see if there are natural as well as supernatural causes.

Discussion

1. Why do most people only have a “natural” worldview?

2. Why is it not enough to see reality from that point of view alone?

3. How can you develop a more “holistic” worldview of reality?
