Why Winning Is Not Everything
Introduction
As the election draws near, emotions are running high. There are a lot of disagreements. Even Christians are drawn to this and, sadly, some reveal the worldly state of their hearts as they disagree with others in social media. Disagreements are inevitable. But how we express our disagreements is a choice. We don’t have to resort to worldly tactics to promote our candidate. We are Christians and we represent Jesus Christ first of all. Therefore, we must act like His disciples, especially in the public arena. Winning is not everything. How do we do this?
Romans 13:8-10; 14:1-21
Three Guidelines
- Discern the true nature of the issue. (Romans 14:1-4) We don’t need to argue about everything. Some things are disputable, meaning people are free to agree to disagree on such matters and it will not do any harm to anyone. It’s just a matter of opinion. This does not mean that we are to tolerate everything. But we must learn to discern those matters that truly require a clear stand from us. Those who want to argue about everything are basically immature or worldly.
- Define its value in relation to the Lord. (Romans 14:5-12) We must judge everything based on the lordship of Christ. He is Lord of all. All of us will be held accountable to Him. Whatever we think, say, or do must be to glorify Him. If a person is thinking, saying, or doing anything by faith in the Lord Jesus, we cannot judge, reject, or condemn that person, even if we disagree or don’t like their choices. Ultimately, he or she will be accountable to God through Jesus. If their choice is not done in faith, then He will be the one to judge them.
- Decide what is edifying to others. (Romans 14:13-21) We cannot do whatever we want to do without considering the lordship of Jesus and how our choices will affect others. The world does not revolve around us. Intentionally causing others to be hurt or to stumble, even if we believe in the rightness of our position, is unloving and unChristian. It’s better to be silent than to hurt people intentionally just because we think we are right. We must choose that which will build up others in love to the glory of God.
Conclusion
- “We are not called to win but to love.”
- Disagreement is unavoidable but loving people is a choice.
- Choose the way of love when you engage in politics.
