How should Christians get involved in politics?
Introduction
Politics can be dirty. This is why some Christians don’t want to be involved in politics. They say that the church should only be concerned with evangelism or discipleship, not with politics. But others argue that we must be involved. In fact, some are too involved already to the point that they forget they are Christians. How can we be involved in politics without losing our identity as Christians? The answer is simple but challenging. Get involved in a way that honors God. How do we do this?
Three Ways
- Get involved as representatives of God (Gen 1:26; Eph 5:8-10; 1 Peter 2:9). Sometimes in our zeal to promote our favorite candidate, we forget who we truly represent. We are God’s people and we should represent God over and above anyone else. No one else can really help us except God alone. He is our only true Helper. He is our only true Savior. To put our trust in human beings, no matter what we think about them, is idolatry.
- Get involved as communicators of truth (2 Cor 4:2; 13:8; Eph 4:15,25). Truth can easily be compromised in the arena of politics. To get more votes, people can sometimes spread lies. As God’s people, we cannot be part of that. We must be truthful in all that we say. Regardless of our candidate, the truth must speak for itself. We must not twist the facts. When we point out something about someone, it must be truthful and it must be verifiable.
- Get involved as advocates of the common good (Zechariah 7:9-10; Micah 6:8; Titus 3:8). Not everyone in our nation is a sincere follower of Jesus Christ. But we all share common aspirations for what is good for all. We all believe in justice and mercy. We all believe that kindness and compassion must be shown to all without prejudice. We must be advocates of what is right and good for our society, not just for a particular personality or political party. We must examine the validity of political promises based on actual actions in the past.
Conclusion
- “Our involvement must honor God, not personalities or political parties.”
- As the people of God, our first loyalty is to God and His kingdom.
