A Heart Devoted To God
Introduction
Obedience is not the only barometer for knowing whether a person has a heart after God’s own heart. Like David, worship is another way we can show our devotion to God. Unfortunately, many today are not interested in prioritizing the worship of God in their lives. Worship is not merely singing or listening to worship songs. It has to do with a heart that is fully devoted to God. How can we develop that kind of heart?
Three Acts of Devotion
- Be all-out in worshiping God (2 Samuel 6:1-23). David was not afraid to express his full devotion to God. He would not allow anything or anyone to hinder him from showing his heart for God. Many people today hold back on their worship. They do not want to express fully their love for God. They may worship God with their lips (barely whispering) but their whole being, especially their body, is not fully engaged in true worship.
- Be influential in worshiping God (1 Chron 16:1-43). David used his position of influence to encourage others to worship God. Instead of being influenced, he influenced them. Today, many of us allow others to influence us such that we set aside our true worship of God for other more “enjoyable” activities. There was a time when Sunday was truly set apart for worshiping God together with our families and friends. But now many set aside worship and use their Sundays for doing something else.
- Be generous in worshiping God (1 Chron 22:1-19; 28:1-21; 29:1-20). David was willing to sacrifice all his resources — his time, talents, and treasures — to worship God. He did not hold back on his giving because he loved God and wanted to worship Him fully. Because of the pandemic, many people today neglect the discipline of giving. They may be extravagant as far as their own needs or wants are concerned. They don’t mind splurging money if it’s for enjoyment. But they are not generous when it comes to worshiping God.
Conclusion
- “A heart devoted to God will always worship God.”
