Lesson 1: What every person needs

Instructions: Read the lesson. Make sure that you check the Scriptural references (don’t just skip it). Then answer the questions below. Do your best to answer them without looking at the lesson. You can close your eyes while you’re trying to answer the question. This will show whether you have actually understood the lesson or not. If you cannot really answer the question, then go back to the lesson to find the right answer. If you were able to answer, check if it’s correct by going back to the lesson.

Lesson:

God’s purpose for every human being is found in 1 Timothy 2:3-4. In summary, He wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

The first part of this statement has to do with hearing and understanding the Gospel, responding to it by faith, expressing that faith through water baptism, and receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:36-41).

The second part has to do with learning how to be a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ in the context of a community of faith (Acts 2:42-47). “Knowledge of the truth” in the Bible is never just “head knowledge.” It’s all about putting truth into action, or, more commonly, into “application” (Eph 4:20-24). To be a faithful disciple is all about practicing the six godly habits in and through such a community of faith. The end result of this process is a person who is living in love, i.e. learning how to love God with all his or her heart and to love his or her neighbor (i.e. fellow believers, family members, and the lost) as himself or herself. Loving the lost is all about repeating the same process in the lives of those who are not yet saved and have come to the knowledge of the truth (i.e. making disciples).

This is what we need to do. This is the reason why we are still on earth. We must make faithful disciples of every people group (Matthew 28:19-20) — i.e. help each and everyone we meet to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth (to become “disciples”). But more than this, we must look for people who will also be able to do the same thing, that is, make faithful disciples of others also (this is called “leadership development”, 2 Timothy 2:1-2).
